Frame TV art keeps turning off: how to keep Art Mode on

Updated September 17, 2026

A Frame TV that keeps turning its art off is almost always doing what a setting told it to. The Frame is designed to dim and sleep when nobody is in the room, and to go dark in a dark room; add an Apple TV or games console sending power commands over HDMI and it can look like the art “won’t stay on”. Work through these in order – the first three fix most cases.

1. Sleep after (the usual culprit)

Art Mode settings → Sleep after. This is how long the art stays on after the motion sensor last saw someone: 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 1, 2, 4 hours, or Off. If your art switches off while you are reading on the sofa, the sensor did not register you and the timer expired. Set it to Off (stay on) or 2–4 hours.

Where the settings are: in Art Mode press Select/up → gear icon, or Settings → General → Art Mode settings. Full list in Art Mode settings explained.

2. Motion detector sensitivity

Art Mode settings → Motion detector → Off / Low / Medium / High. The sensor sits at the bottom of the TV and needs a clear view of the room. If a coffee table or soundbar blocks it, or the TV is high on a wall, it may never see you. Set it to High, or Off if you would rather the art simply stayed on.

3. Night mode

Art Mode settings → Night mode. When on, the art turns off in a dark room. If your art disappears at dusk or when you dim the lights, this is why. Turn it Off if you want art in the evening.

4. Brightness sensor confusion

A lamp directly below or beside the TV can push the sensor’s readings around and cause the art to drop out or flicker. Move the lamp, or turn the brightness sensor off and set brightness manually.

5. HDMI-CEC: Apple TV, consoles, soundbars

Devices on HDMI can send a standby command to the TV. When an Apple TV, PlayStation or Fire TV goes to sleep it may tell the Frame to power off fully, skipping Art Mode. Fixes:

  • On the Frame: Settings → General → External Device Manager → Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC) → Off.
  • On Apple TV: Settings → Remotes and Devices → Control TVs and Receivers → Off. (You lose one-remote convenience; Art Mode wins.)
  • Consoles: turn off “HDMI device link” / “Enable HDMI-CEC” in the console’s settings.

Details on living with an Apple TV are in music and Apple TV in Art Mode.

6. Auto Power Off and eco timers

Settings → General → Power and Energy Saving (older: Eco Solution) → Auto Power Off → Off. Some models also have Power Saving Mode or Energy Saving levels that override Art Mode after a period; set them off.

7. Sleep timer and On/Off timers

Check Settings → General → System Manager → Time → Sleep Timer / Off Timer. A forgotten sleep timer switches the TV fully off every night at the same time.

8. SmartThings automations and routines

If the art turns off at the same time daily, look for a SmartThings routine or Bixby routine that powers the TV off, and any smart plug on the One Connect box. Also check that the One Connect box is on a live outlet rather than a switched one.

9. Firmware

A few firmware versions have had Art Mode sleep bugs. Settings → Support → Software Update → Update Now. If the TV is up to date and still misbehaves, a Reset Picture / Reset Art Mode settings and, as a last resort, a factory reset resolve corrupted settings.

If the art never appears at all

Different problem: Art Mode may be disabled (one press of Power should go to Art Mode, not black). Check Settings → General → System Manager (or Art Mode settings on newer years) for the Art Mode / “Art Mode on power off” toggle. If Art Mode is stuck on or the Art Store will not load, see Art Mode not working.

The “stay on forever” configuration

For a living-room Frame that should always show art when the TV is not in use:

SettingValue
Sleep afterOff
Motion detectorOff
Night modeOff
Brightness sensorOn
Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC)Off
Auto Power OffOff

Power use in this configuration is roughly 30–60 W depending on size and brightness – see Art Mode power consumption.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Frame TV art keep turning off?

In order of likelihood: the motion sensor decided the room was empty and the Sleep-after timer ran out; Night mode switched it off because the room went dark; an HDMI device (Apple TV, console, soundbar) sent a power-off command; or an eco/auto-off timer fired. Each has a setting that fixes it.

How do I make Frame TV art stay on all the time?

Art Mode settings: Sleep after → Off, Motion detector → Off, Night mode → Off. Then turn off Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC) and Auto Power Off in General settings. The art will stay on until you press the button.

Why does my Frame TV go black in Art Mode?

Usually Night mode (dark room) or the motion sensor plus Sleep-after. If it goes black the instant you leave TV mode, Art Mode itself may be disabled – Settings → General → System Manager / Art Mode → turn Art Mode on – or a connected device is putting the TV into standby.

Does the Frame TV turn off automatically?

By design, yes: Art Mode dims and sleeps when no one is detected, to save power. You can change how quickly with Sleep after and the motion sensor, or disable both.

Why does my Frame TV art turn off when I turn off Apple TV?

HDMI-CEC. When the Apple TV sleeps it tells the TV to power off, which bypasses Art Mode on some firmware. Turn off 'Control TVs and Receivers' on the Apple TV, or Anynet+ on the Frame.
