How much power does a Frame TV use in Art Mode?

Updated September 17, 2026

Art Mode is designed to be left on, so Samsung built it to draw much less than TV mode – but “much less” on a 75” panel is still a light bulb or two. Here are realistic numbers, the settings that change them, and how the timer and slideshow options work.

Typical Art Mode power by size

Samsung does not publish a single Art Mode figure; these are typical measured ranges from reviews and owners at moderate Art Mode brightness, 2022-and-later models:

SizeArt Mode (art displayed)TV mode (typical)Sensor sleep / standby
43”~20–30 W~60–80 W~0.5 W
55”~30–40 W~90–120 W~0.5 W
65”~35–55 W~110–150 W~0.5 W
75”~45–70 W~150–200 W~0.5 W
85”~55–85 W~180–250 W~0.5 W

Older 2017–2021 models and the 2025 Frame Pro (Mini-LED) vary; brightness is the dominant factor on all of them.

What it costs

Example: 55” Frame, 35 W, art shown 8 hours a day, electricity at $0.17/kWh: 35 W × 8 h = 0.28 kWh/day ≈ 102 kWh/year ≈ $17/year.

Same TV on 24/7 with sensors off: 307 kWh/year ≈ $52/year. A 75” in the same always-on setup is roughly $80–100. Not nothing, but well under a conventional TV used as a screensaver at full brightness.

The settings that change it

  • Brightness – near-linear with power. Lowering Art Mode brightness two notches for realism also cuts consumption noticeably. See brightness.
  • Motion detector – the biggest saver. With it on, the art is off whenever the room is empty. Set it to Medium and the panel is typically active only a few hours a day.
  • Sleep after – how long art stays on after motion stops. 30 minutes to 1 hour balances convenience and power; Off keeps the panel on until you turn it off.
  • Night mode – off in the dark, saving the overnight hours.
  • Brightness sensor – lowers the panel in dim rooms, saving power in the evening.

Art Mode timers

  • Sleep after (Art Mode settings): the motion-linked timer above.
  • On/Off Timer (Settings → General → System Manager → Time): a fixed schedule – e.g. art on 7 am to 11 pm. The Off Timer turns the TV fully off, so at the On time it wakes into Art Mode (if Power on to Art Mode is set) or TV.
  • Sleep Timer: a one-off countdown, mostly for TV mode.

Slideshow, rotation and display time

Art Mode can rotate through pieces automatically. In SmartThings or Art Mode settings choose Slideshow (older firmware: Art of the day / Rotation), pick the source (Favourites or My Collection) and the interval – from 10 minutes to daily – and optionally shuffle. Shortening the display time in the art gallery means this same interval. Rotation itself has no meaningful power cost. Step-by-step: how to change and rotate art.

Is it wasteful to leave art on?

With sensors on, a Frame in Art Mode uses less over a year than many people’s cable box on standby. If power matters, the sensible configuration is Motion detector Medium, Sleep after 30 min, Night mode on, brightness lowered – and then it is worth having something on the screen worth the watts. The calming collection and dark still lifes also happen to be the lowest-power art: dark pixels draw less on an LED-backlit panel only marginally, but they let you run the brightness lower.

Frequently asked questions

How much electricity does a Frame TV use in Art Mode?

Roughly 25–60 W depending on size and brightness – around a third of TV mode – while the art is displayed, dropping to about 0.5 W when the motion sensor puts it to sleep. A 55" at typical Art Mode brightness sits near 30–40 W.

How much does Art Mode cost per year?

At 35 W for 8 hours a day and $0.17/kWh, about $17 a year. Left on 24 hours a day with sensors off, roughly $50 a year for a 55" and more for larger sizes.

Does the motion sensor save power?

Yes – it is the main saver. With the sensor and Sleep-after on, the panel is off most of the day and only shows art when someone is in the room.

How do I set a timer for Art Mode?

Art Mode settings → Sleep after sets how long art stays on after the last motion (15 min–4 h, or Off). For a fixed schedule use Settings → General → System Manager → Time → On/Off Timer.
