How to turn Art Mode on or off on a Samsung Frame TV

Updated September 17, 2026

The Frame’s power button has two jobs, and most confusion about turning Art Mode on or off comes from that. Here is the full set of controls.

The power button

  • Short press (TV → Art Mode): the TV stops showing TV and displays art. This is Art Mode “on”.
  • Short press again (Art Mode → TV): back to the last source.
  • Long press (~2 seconds): the TV turns fully off – black screen, minimal power. A short press wakes it to Art Mode (or TV, depending on the Power on to setting).

2022-and-later Frame remotes add a dedicated Art Mode button (a small picture icon) that jumps straight to art from any source.

Turn Art Mode on

If a short press of Power gives a black screen instead of art, Art Mode has been disabled:

  • 2017–2021: Settings → General → System Manager → Art Mode → On.
  • 2022–2023: Settings → General → Art Mode settings → Art Mode → On (some firmware: Turn on Art Mode when the TV is turned off).
  • 2024–2025: Settings → General & Privacy → Art Mode options → Art Mode → On.

Turn Art Mode off (permanently)

Same menus, set Art Mode → Off. The Frame then behaves like any Samsung TV: one press of Power turns it fully off. Reasons people do this: a bedroom TV that should be dark at night, a Frame used purely as a monitor, or wanting the lowest standby power. You can still get Art Mode back at any time by re-enabling it.

Alternatives that keep Art Mode available:

  • Night mode → On turns the art off automatically in a dark room.
  • Sleep after → 15 min with Motion detector → Low makes the art disappear soon after you leave.

Turn off the art but leave the TV “on”

There is no blank-screen-on state; Art Mode is the Frame’s version of standby. If you want the panel to appear off while staying instantly available, display a black or very dark image (a near-black abstract with no matte reads as an off TV) or use Night mode in a dim room.

Art Mode won’t turn on or off

  • Stuck in Art Mode / stuck on TV: hold Power to power-cycle. If the remote is ignored, unplug the One Connect box for 30 seconds.
  • Goes straight to black: Art Mode disabled (above), or an HDMI device sending a standby command – turn off Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC) in External Device Manager. See keeps turning off.
  • Art Mode option greyed out: the TV is in Retail/Store mode – Settings → General → System Manager → Usage Mode → Home.
  • Persisting issues: Art Mode not working.

Voice and app

  • SmartThings: Frame → Power toggles between Art Mode and off; the Art Mode tab lets you set the displayed art.
  • Bixby / Alexa / Google: “turn on Art Mode” works on recent firmware with the TV linked; “turn off the TV” typically sends it to Art Mode rather than fully off, which is the behaviour most people want.

Frequently asked questions

Can you turn off Art Mode on a Samsung Frame TV?

Yes. Either turn the TV fully off by holding Power, or disable Art Mode permanently in Settings → General → System Manager / Art Mode settings so the Frame behaves like a normal TV.

How do I put my Frame TV in Art Mode?

Press Power once from TV mode. On 2022+ remotes there is also a dedicated Art Mode button. If the screen goes black instead, Art Mode has been disabled in settings – turn it back on.

How do I turn off the art but keep the TV on?

Art Mode is what the Frame does instead of standby; there is no 'TV on, blank screen' state. Use a black or very dark artwork, or turn Night mode on and dim the room.

Why won't my Frame TV go into Art Mode?

Art Mode is disabled in settings, an HDMI device is forcing the TV to standby via CEC, or a firmware glitch. See the not-working guide.
